Made in Vietnam Zine's first collective exhibition.
Triển lãm sưu tập đầu tiên của Made in Vietnam Zine.
In collaboration with Xom Bac Cau in Long Bien, we hosted a one day exhibition featuring a collection of Hanoi-based artists and projects with free art workshops centred around environmentalism and conservation. There were small concerts, film screenings and an exclusive performance piece from artist Bao Vuong.
We were interviewed by National Geographic's 'Chasing the Sun' for their program exploring subcultures and women-lead projects.
ARTS & ZINE FESTIVAL
SAIGON
In the summer of 2019 we hosted a collaborative festival over 3 days inside Soma Saigon.
The events centred around an exhibition featuring artists from previous issues of Made in Vietnam Zine. We hosted a drink and draw event hosted by GenderFunk's Esta Ricardo, live music concerts, an evening of local short films and an arts market with other creatives and local zine makers.

live.make.share is an artist-in-residence & exchange program developed from Hanoi, Vietnam under the umbrella of Undecided Productions and in collaboration with Hiên Vân Ceramics.

FASHION REVOLUTION: MEET THE
ARTISAN
Tamay is from a long line of Mien women who make their own clothes and impart their skills to their daughters. Mien women spend a year making themselves a set of embroidered clothes, which they wear for the following year. Tamay is a businesswoman and entrepreneur, she even has a collaboration with a British designer - Tamay & Me. She cannot read or write yet she has taught herself English and Vietnamese and has become a figurehead of her community. This event was an opportunity to hear her inspiring story and learn about how she and the women of her community make their own clothes. It included an exhibition of her work, including traditional ceremonial garments. All the proceeds from sales were given to Tamay and her community.

TIME DOG CHICKEN TOES
Solo exhibition from artist Georg Whelan
Georg Whelan is an Australian artist based in Hanoi. Through expressive figurative painting, film photography, drawing and text, he studies the banal to the extraordinary. His work observes daily rituals, constructed narratives and dichotomies, referencing a broad spectrum of sources from historical figures to bathroom graffiti. Bringing these elements together - the result is vibrant, elegantly surreal and at times a bit vulgar.Georg’s recent works examine the rich and complex history of Vietnam; encapsulating both the traditional Chinese and colonial influences that parallel and have a unique overlay. Whether looking at the eclectic building styles, the blend of nature and man-made, ornamental elements that demonstrate beliefs, or the general discourses that exist in modern day Vietnam.
Georg Whelan là 1 nghệ sĩ đến từ úc và hiện đang sinh sống và định cư tại Hà Nội. Thông qua những bức tranh với nét vẽ tượng trưng đầy cảm xúc, ảnh film, bức vẽ và những dòng chữ, anh nghiên cứu và tìm tòi về những điều tầm thường cho đến phi thường. Các tảc phẩm thể hiện sự quan sát về những thói quen thường nhật, cấu thành từ sự tường thuật và những ngã rẽ, đưa vào từ những nhân vật lịch sử cho đến những bức grafiti nguệch ngoạc trong nhà vệ sinh. Đưa các yếu tố này hợp vào nhau - và kết quả là sự rung động, có những yếu tố siêu thực 1 cách tinh tế và cũng có chút gì đó thô tục trong tác phẩm. Các tác phẩm mới của Georg lần này soi xét và khám phá sự giàu có và đa dạng về bề dày văn hoá lịch sử Việt Nam; được gói lại giữa hai phía truyền thống của Trung Quốc và ảnh hưởng của thuộc địa tạo nên sự đa chiều và độc đáo chồng chéo lên nhau. Có thể là khi nhìn vào các toà nhà với phong cách chiết trung, sự hoà trộn giữa thiên nhiên và những thứ nhân tạo, những đồ vật trang trí nhằm thể hiện tín ngưỡng hay những diễn ngôn chung đang hiện hữu trong Việt Nam thời hiện đại.

STORY
These stories were told by women from different backgrounds, each with their own relationship and experience with their bodies. By making themselves vulnerable through this process they trusted us to share a personal part of them. This project was organised by Ellen Downes and Maartje Matheeuwsen, during the exhibition period they hosted life drawing events and tantra workshops.
Có những câu chuyện đau lòng, có những chuyện ấm lòng. Đó là những chia sẻ của những người phụ nữ đã bị bắt nạt, xâm hại, quấy rối tình dục. Những người phụ nữ đã trải qua phẫu thuật, sống sót căn bệnh ung thư, vật lộn với chứng rối loạn ăn uống, những người mẹ, những người sợ làm mẹ. Những người phụ nữ yêu thương hay ghét bỏ cơ thể của mình, nhưng không phải lúc nào cũng như vậy. Chúng ta đều đang trên một hành trình và đây là không gian để chúng ta bắt đầu một cuộc đối thoại quan trọng.

'I Feel At Home Among These Questions' is a collaborative show that unites the work of Saigon-based photographers Annie Dang and Ariel Cameron.
Ariel Cameron 'Tropic Gothic'
'Tropic Gothic was born in the quiet moments at dusk as I became acquainted with the thick air of an approaching monsoon season. First beginning along the banks of the Mekong Delta, the series soon found inspiration in the stories of Filipino writer Nick Joaquin, who coined the term Tropical Gothic in 1972. There is a certain feeling of a fullness in the tropics; ripe fruit, overgrown greens and empty moments as everyone retreats from the sun.'
Tropic Gothic được sinh ra tại những khoảnh khắc yên lặng lúc chạng vạng khi cô đã quen với không khí dày đặc của mùa mưa sắp đến. Đầu tiên bắt đầu dọc theo những bờ sông Đồng bằng Sông Cửu Long, series này không lâu sau đã tìm thấy cảm hứng trong những câu chuyện của tác giả người Philipine Nick Joaquin, người đã đặt ra thuật ngữ Tropical Gothic vào năm 1972. Annie Dang, 'Veil'
'The ongoing series explores connections through three generations of Vietnamese women. In the presence of language barriers, cultural dissonance, and unspoken traumas, the urgency to piece together my family's history is marked by an apprehension and a state of being emotionally tongue-tied. I inquired as to why it feels vulnerable to step into such complexities in order to unearth and witness, let alone tell, these stories? Ultimately, it is a worthwhile discomfort in which I continues to wrap myself, trusting in the mutual desire for closeness to illuminate their path.'
Series vẫn đang được tiếp tục này khám phá những liên hệ qua ba thế hệ phụ nữ Việt Nam. Trong sự hiện diện của các rào cản ngôn ngữ, những bất hoà văn hoá, sang chấn không nói ra, sự cấp bách của việc xâu chuỗi lại lịch sử gia đình của cô được đánh dấu bởi một sự e sợ và một trạng thái cảm xúc làm cho mình không nói ra được. Cô đặt câu hỏi tại sao ta cảm thấy có thể bị tổn thương khi bước vào sự phức tạp nhằm phát hiện ra và chứng kiến, chưa kể đến, những câu chuyện này? Cuối cùng thì, nó là một sự khó chịu đáng giá mà trong đó cô tiếp tục bao bọc bản thân, tin tưởng vào những mong ước chung của sự gần gũi để rọi sáng con đường của chúng.
